Your Symptoms Aren't the Enemy: What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You
By Dr. Lisa Koche, MD
Most of us were never taught to listen to our bodies. We were taught to manage them.
Push through the fatigue. Suppress the fever. Medicate the anxiety. Keep going.
So when a symptom shows up and won’t leave, we treat it like a malfunction. Something broken. Something to quiet before it gets worse.
After years of caring for patients, I’ve come to see it differently. Symptoms are not malfunction. They are messages.
Your body speaks in signals
Your body is constantly gathering information about your food, your sleep, your stress, your environment and your relationships. When something is out of balance for long enough, it tells you in the only language it has: sensation.
Fatigue can be a signal about energy production, blood sugar or sleep. Bloating and irregular digestion can reflect what’s happening with your gut, your stress response or your food. Restless sleep, a racing heart or a short fuse can point to a nervous system that has been on high alert for too long.
None of these signals diagnoses anything on its own. But together, they tell a story worth reading.
Quieting a signal is not the same as answering it
There is a place for symptom relief. If you’re in pain or can’t sleep, feeling better matters, and medication can be the right choice.
But when the only goal is to make a symptom disappear, we can miss the reason it showed up. The headache returns. The reflux comes back. A new symptom appears somewhere else.
The question I want every patient to ask is not just “How do I make this stop?” It’s “What is my body trying to tell me?”
Four ways to start listening
- Notice patterns, not just moments. Keep a simple note for two weeks: what you ate, how you slept, your stress level and how you felt. Patterns often appear that a single bad day never reveals.
- Look upstream. Ask what changed before the symptom began. A new job, a loss, a move, a diet change or a season of poor sleep can all leave a mark.
- Respect the basics. Sleep, blood sugar balance, movement, hydration and genuine rest are not small things. They are the foundation every other system depends on.
- Find a practitioner who asks why. You deserve someone who looks at the whole picture, including your history, labs, lifestyle and stress, not just the symptom in front of them.
When the signals finally quiet
When you begin to respond to what your body is saying, something shifts. Not overnight, and not in a straight line. But steadily.
And when the signals finally quiet, it isn’t because your body gave up. It’s because it was finally heard.
What has your body been trying to tell you?
